Our merry friend goodnaturedly insisted on accompanying us to help us get some few supplies which we were in need of; shot, paper, oil, &c, & it is wonderful what resources this unpromising place developed under his skilful guidance. They culminated in two bottles of sparkling beer (they got it from Uleåborg) to which he treated us – Oh what luxury!

The interior of the Finnish cottage we saw was very comfortable; clocks on the walls, & fiddles, (they are a very musical race), lots of handsome pipes, and curiously worked tobacco pouches; in the windows roses, cactus, stocks & heartsease. Having supplied our wants, we invited the Ländman, or ‘Nimismies’ as the Finns call him [police chief], to partake of English tea, & with the excellent soup we have with us, Captain’s biscuits, tea, and Scotch whiskey to wind up with (eked out with good native butter and cream) & made his heart glad. I further gave him a good English hunting knife, which I think pleased him very much. He tells us that we are now in a country of tame reindeer – and that when we get to the fells we may expect to see wild reindeer and bears.
